What Ios is the Ipod Touch 6Th Generation
The answer to what ios is the ipod touch 6th generation is simple: the iPod touch 6th generation supports up to iOS 12.5.7, which is the last version Apple released for that model. It cannot update to iOS 13 or later, so if your device is already on iOS 12.5.7, it is at the newest supported software level.
What is the latest iOS for iPod touch 6th generation?
The latest supported version is iOS 12.5.7. Apple ended major iOS updates for the iPod touch 6th generation at iOS 12, and later versions were not made available for this device.
| Device | Latest supported iOS | Can it get newer iOS versions? |
|---|---|---|
| iPod touch 6th generation | iOS 12.5.7 | No |
Can iPod touch 6th generation get iOS 13 or newer?
No. The iPod touch 6th generation cannot update to iOS 13, iOS 14, iOS 15, iOS 16, iOS 17, or iOS 18. If you see guides about newer iOS versions, they apply to newer iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch models, not this one.
How to check your iPod touch iOS version
If you want to confirm what version is installed on your device, check it in Settings.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap About.
- Look for Software Version.
If the device is eligible for an update, you can also go to Settings > General > Software Update. On an iPod touch 6th generation, the newest available version should be iOS 12.5.7 if it is not already installed.
Why the iPod touch 6th generation cannot use later iOS releases
Apple limits newer iOS releases to devices with the hardware needed to run them properly. The iPod touch 6th generation is an older model, so it does not support the system requirements for later versions of iOS.
In practical terms, that means:
- You will not receive new iOS feature updates.
- Some newer apps may eventually require a later iOS version.
- Security updates, if any are still available for the device, are limited to the last supported branch.
What this means for app use and everyday performance
For basic tasks, the iPod touch 6th generation can still work as a music player, media device, or for older apps that remain compatible. The main limitation is software compatibility, not just speed. Over time, some apps and services may stop supporting iOS 12, which can affect downloads, sign-ins, or updates.
If your goal is to run the latest versions of popular apps, a newer iPhone or iPad is usually a better fit.
iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad iOS compatibility are different
A common point of confusion is that people search for iOS support across different Apple devices, but the answer depends on the exact model. For example, questions like is ios 18 available for ipad 10th generation, is ios 18 available for iphone xr, or what ios is the ipad 6th generation all have different answers because Apple supports each device separately.
The iPod touch 6th generation is not the same as an iPhone or iPad, and its update path ends much earlier than many newer Apple devices.
